Over the years, we’ve come to understand that the nation’s nursing shortage is not due to a lack of interest on the part of prospective nurses. In fact, many states report large waiting lists for nursing degree programs. Nor has the shortage been caused by disillusioned or aging nurses leaving the profession for other fields. Quite simply, the underlying issue is that there are too few qualified nurse educators at our colleges and universities.
